TEFLON USAGE

The TeflonŽ trademark was coined by DuPont. The story of TeflonŽ began in April 6, 1938, at DuPont's Jackson Laboratory in New Jersey. DuPont chemist, Dr. Roy J. Plunkett, was working with gases related to FreonŽ refrigerants. Upon checking a frozen, compressed sample of tetra-fluoro-ethylene, he and his associates discovered that the sample had polymerized spontaneously into a white, waxy solid to form poly-tetra-fluoro-ethylene (PTFE). http://www.dupont.com/teflon/newsroom/history.html

Following are the advantages of using TeflonŽ as insulating material over the conventional PVC :

  • Wide range of service temperatures ranging from -200 oC to +300o C. Withstands overheating due to transient current load reducing the hazards of flashover in tightly bundled wiring
  • Does not propogate or serve as a fuel for fire and is self extinguishing
  • Wires and cables are much smaller in size and weight. Consequently, more circuits per conduit are possible
  • TeflonŽ has low dielectric constant and is not altered by heat ageing
  • Resists damage from abrasion during conduit pulling or rough handling. TeflonŽ has not exhibited any changes in it's electrical, mechanical, chemical properties after nearly 30 years of outdoor exposure at Du Pont's test areas in Florida and Michigan
  • Not affected by long term exposures to virtually all chemical and corrosive environments including acids, bases, paints, lacquers, fuels etc.
